Surabaya, Indonesia's bustling metropolitan city renowned for its progressive initiatives, has once again secured the esteemed "Anugerah Parahita Ekapraya" award in the mentor category for its outstanding contributions to women's empowerment and protection. This remarkable feat marks the third win for Surabaya in the highest category dedicated to women's advancement in Indonesia, underscoring the city's steadfast commitment to fostering an environment where women can thrive, lead, and succeed.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Surabaya's success in maintaining this prestigious accolade is a testament to its longstanding dedication to women's empowerment and protection. Through a series of innovative programs, policies, and partnerships, the city has actively worked to dismantle barriers and create opportunities for women to achieve their full potential in all aspects of life. For instance, Surabaya has taken a proactive step towards enhancing family wellbeing and community cohesion by establishing Family Learning Centers in 487 community halls across the city. In addition, Surabaya has established WomanInformation Center to equip women with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to thrive in all aspects of life. By promoting access to information, fostering community engagement, and advocating for gender-responsive policies, Surabaya's Woman Information Center is expected to be a driving positive change and to advance women's rights and empowerment in the city and beyond.

Forum Puspa Srikandi Surabaya

Surabaya has taken a proactive stance towards ensuring the welfare and well-being of women through the establishment of "Forum Puspa Srikandi." Inaugurated by Surabaya City Mayor, Eri Cahyadi, this public participation forum serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to come together and address issues related to women's welfare in the city. Comprising representatives from government agencies, NonGovernment organizations, academic community, business institutions and society, Forum Puspa facilitates collaborative efforts to identify challenges, develop solutions, and implement initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality, protecting women and children's rights, and enhancing their overall quality of life. Through open dialogue, mutual cooperation, and shared responsibility, Forum Puspa embodies Surabaya's commitment to foster inclusive governance, social cohesion, and sustainable development that leaves no woman behind.

Women’s Collaborative Efforts for City Development

Surabaya is witnessing a powerful wave of collaboration among women's groups dedicated to the city's development. Through the concerted efforts of woman organizations such as TP PKK, Gerakan Organisasi Wanita, Dharma Wanita and Bunda PAUD Surabaya Working Groups, women from all walks of life are coming together to drive positive change, foster community empowerment, and promote gender responsive policies across Surabaya. For instance, led by the city's First Lady, Ibu Rini Indriyandi Eri Cahyadi, TP PKK plays a pivotal role in spearheading programs and activities aimed at enhancing the well-being of women and children, promoting health and nutrition, and fostering economic empowerment through skills training and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Steady Increase in Gender Development Index

Surabaya has demonstrated continuous progress in gender development indices, with a steady increase observed over recent years. In 2021, the city recorded a gender development index of 93.90, reflecting ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and empower women across various sectors. Building upon this foundation, Surabaya showed a notable rise to 94.21 in 2022, signaling a continued commitment to advancing gender inclusivity and fostering opportunities for all residents. Impressively, this positive trend persisted into the following year, with the gender development index further increasing to 94.36 in 2023. These successive improvements underscore Surabaya's dedication to create an environment where women can contribute meaningfully to society, and participate fully in the city's education, health and economic sectors.
